三、閱讀理解
Many daily English expressions are based on colours. You may find it interesting to know that colours in these expressions mean quite differently from their original (原來的) meanings. Red is a hot colour. People often use it to represent heat. When they say “see red”, that means they are very angry about something. Loud music is popular with many people. Some may say that such music is red-hot. Red is an active colour. A red-letter day is a happy day. When criminals (罪犯) are caught at the scene of a crime, people say that they are caught red-handed. Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say “I'm in the pink” when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink colour that shows that they are in good health. The colour green is natural for trees and grass. It is a natural colour for humans. A person with a green thumb has a special ability to make plants grow. But sometimes it is an unnatural colour. Some may say, “I'm feeling a bit green.” When a person is feeling seasick, he or she may look very green. Sometimes a person may say he or she is “green with envy” because he or she does not have something as nice as someone else, or he or she may say, “I'm green with envy.” The colour black is also often used in expressions. People may say “it's a black day” when everything goes wrong on that day. “A black sheep of the family” means the one who is unlike other family members and is always considered to do bad things. In some cases, colours describe a situation. For example, blackouts were common during World War II. During the blackouts, all the lights in a city were turned off at night to make it difficult for German planes to find their aims in the dark.
