    閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A;B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

A popular saying going, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves ? the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn’t be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us motive ourselves, remember things, solves problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well on a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying, “Good job!”

Often, words came out of our mouths without us thinking about the effects they will have; but we should be aware that our words cause certain responses to others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or we can use harsh, critical language, which will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊) and motive others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

56. The author argues in the first paragraph that ________.

   A. words have lasting effects on us

   B. words will never hurt us at all

   C. positive effects last longer than negative effcts

   D. negative words may let us down

57. Why should we not feel embarrassed when it comes to talking to ourselves?

   A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to oneself.

   B. Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health.

   C. Talking to ourselves helps us to solve all the problems.

   D. It does harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.

58. The underlined phrase “give ourselves a pat on the back” in paragraph 3 means _________.

   A. blame ourselves               B. punish ourselves

   C. praise ourselves               D. talk to ourselves

59. Which of the following statements would the author agree to?

   A. Unkind words are more unlikely to be forgotten.

   B. It is better to think twice before talking to others.

C. Words always possess long positive effects.

   D. Kind words are sometimes not needed at all.

60. Why should we talk in a friendly way when returning an item to a store?

   A. Because kind words build up complex relationships.

   B. Because the clerk in a store is hard to deal with.

   C. Because friendly words cause positive responses.

D. Because critical language may hurt your feelings.

Heading overseas on a business trip or just for pleasure soon? If so, have you thought about how you will get in touch with people where you are going? You may need to catch a cab or get directions to an attraction, not to mention you might want to stay in touch with the folks back home.

Hope you aren't counting on your personal cellphone. Industry experts estimate that most American cellphones won't work overseas due to compatibility (兼容性) issues. And even if yours did work, the roaming (漫游) charges would be too high.

So what are your choices? You could rent a phone with a local number in the country you're traveling to, but that wouldn't do you much good if you're constantly on the go. A more cost-effective way would be to rent a satellite phone from a company like Global Cellular Rental.

The process is amazingly fast and simple. All you have to do is to log onto the company's website, www. globalcellularrental, corn, and place an order. The site will show you the countries you will be traveling to and ask you how long you will need the phone. The company then ships a cellphone directly to you anywhere in the world. The phone arrives with complete instructions. The traveler also learns his overseas phone number well in advance, enabling him to inform all vital contacts of the number before he ever steps on a plane.

Roaming rates are usually 80 percent less than those charged by American service providers. Calls back to the US can be discounted 40 percent or more. The rental cost is just $5 per day, and discount packages are available for long-term rental of two months or more.

This cellphone solution is becoming so popular that Global Cellular Rental actually has relationships with hotel chains around the world to keep phones in stock for hotel guests. And for those whose journey really takes them off the beaten track, the company can also rent satellite phones to them. These phones work anywhere in the world as long as you are outside.

61. Which of the following may serve as the best title?

    A. How to Rent a Satellite Phone

    B. A Cost-effective Way to Communicate While Traveling Overseas

C. A Satellite Phone vs a Personal Cellphone

D. Business of Global Cellular Rental

62. According to the passage, supposing we are going abroad for pleasure, the most cost-effective way to communicate with our friends back home is _________.

    A. to use our own cellphone

    B. to rent a phone with a local number

    C. to communicate on the Internet

    D. to rent a satellite phone

63. Which shows the cost-effective aspect of the satellite phone when an American user travels in Beijing?

    A. The roaming rates are 20% discount compared to American local service.

    B. Calls back to the US cost 60% less compared to American local service.

     C. The rental cost is $150 per month if you rent for three months.

     D. You will spend 40% less compared with American local service when you call back to your friends in the US.

64. The underlined phrase "off the beaten track" in the last paragraph probably means_______.

     A. branches from main roads

     B. places people seldom visit

     C. crowded places in cities

     D. faraway places people never visit

65. What is the purpose of this passage?

     A. To persuade more people around the world to use satellite phones.

B. To show the disadvantages of communication service providers.

C. To promote the company Global Cellular Rental.

D. To show how cost-effective the satellite phones are.

C

Earlier on during my stay in China, I noted a significant lack of Western holidays. Halloween came and went unnoticed. Thanksgiving passed right on by without much more than a celebratory trip to KFC. I thought I made it through, free and clear. Being in China enabled my avoidance of overspending on gifts. During Halloween I did not buy big bags of candy and later eat all of it myself after realizing that children do not trick-or-treat on my street. Life got to feeling pretty good when I realized I could skip all the holiday pomp(盛況)and circumstance by living in Yongzhou, a city in Hunan Province. But it all came crashing down upon me with arrival of Christmas and New Year.

For some reason, the Chinese ignore many other Western traditions, but catch on for the end-of-year celebrations. The grocery stores put out their Christmas trees. Pictures of Santa show up on the windows of flower shops. Wealthier children are seen wearing something similar to a little elf(小精靈) costume: striped stockings, red shirts, green skiers, and elf-like shoes with bells on them.

In terms of Christmas and New Years, among many other holidays, the entire country of America goes crazy with holiday spirit. There are decorations on store windows and inside large supermarkets. The biggest cultural feature, I think, is the fat Santa in large stores and shopping malls. “Santa” sits in the middle of big malls while children line up to sit on his lap. “I want a bicycle for Christmas!” the children will say, or something else equally appropriate.

In the middle of absorbing new holiday traditions in China and missing old ones back home, I found little impressed upon my memory. The parties I attended had only a few memorable moments: little girls dancing the cha cha, company leaders badly singing songs KTV style, a guy performing Kung Fu for a sizable crowd. Admittedly, despite not seeing any parties in people’s houses, I enjoyed what holiday entertainment existed in Yongzhou. I think what I will remember the most, however, is walking into a fancy hotel and seeing women dressed in elf clothing and skinny Chinese men dressed in Santa costumes.

66. From the passage we can know that ________.

A. people in China don’t celebrate Thanksgiving at all

B. Chinese like to celebrate Halloween in KFC

C. the author stays in China to avoid spending too much in buying gifts

D. no children in China come and ask the author for candies in Halloween

C. The author enjoy a quiet free life except when Christmas and New Year arrive.

D. Staying in grand hotels is the best way to celebrate Christmas in China.

68. We may infer from the passage that ___________.

A. Christmas is more popular in China than many other Western holidays

B. the Chinese today celebrate Christmas in the same way as Americans do

C. the Chinese should learn from Americans how to celebrate holidays

D. the author prefers the Chinese celebrating ways to the American ones

69. What happens at Christmas in America?

A. Girls will dance the cha cha to celebrate the Christmas .

B. The whole nation celebrate it by decorating stores and supermarkets.

C. Christmas usually features a fat Santa in large stores and shopping malls.

D. the Santa will buy bicycles for the children who expect them..

70. This passage is mainly about ________.

A. the difference between Chinese and American holiday traditions

B. the author’s dissatisfaction over China’s lack of Western holidays

C. how the Chinese celebrate Western holidays

D. the author’s impression upon the western holiday entertainment in China

D

As you read this, nearly 80, 000 Americans are waiting for a new heart, kidney or some other organ that can save their life. Tragically about 6, 000 of them will die this year--nearly twice as many people as died in the Sept. 11 attacks--because they won’t get their transplant in time. 86% of Americans say they support organ donation, but only 20%actually sign up to do it.

Part of the problem is the way we handle organ donation. Americans who want to make this sort of gift have to opt in―that is, indicate on a driver’s license that when they die, they want their organs to be made available. Many European and Asian countries take the opposite approach. In Singapore, for example, all residents receive a letter when they come of age informing them that their organs may be donated unless they object. In Belgium, which adopted a similar presumed-consent system 12 years ago, less than 2%of the population has decided to opt out.

Further complicating the situation in the U. S. is the fact that whatever decision you make can be overruled by your family. The final say is left to your surviving relatives, who must make up their minds in a few hours after brain death has been declared. There are as many as 50 body parts that can save or transform the life of some others, but for many families lost in grief, the idea of operating on a loved one is more than they can bear. The U. S like all medically advanced societies has struggled to find a way to balance an individual’s right over his body with society’s need to save others from death. Tommy Thompson, Health Secretary, last spring announced plans to encourage donations.Perhaps it is time that the government considered improving the system.

71. What is most Americans’ attitude towards the organ donation?

A. Tragical          B. Doubtful          C. Supportive               D. Objective

72. According to the author, one of the reason for a shortage of organs in America is that      .

A. most Americans are afraid to donate their organs after death

B. the information about organ donation is not popular in America

C. the way to handle organ donation is far from perfect

D. people waiting for transplant are rapidly increasing in America

73. The underlined term “presumed―consent” in Paragraph 2 means              .

A. their organs should be donated whether they agree or not

B. they agree that their organs will be donated after death

C. people think operating on a dead body is inhuman

D. they are sure to be happy after they decide to donate their organs

74. It can be inferred from the passage that                 .

A. Americans have a long tradition of organ donation

B. all the states in America resist the presumed―consent system

C. it's not easy to find a way to serve the society’s need

D. tile government is not active in solving the problem

75. What is probably to be discussed in the next paragraph after the passage?

A. Meet society’s need to save others.

B. Find a way to balance an individual’s right.

C. Make a plan to encourage the organ donation.

D. Improve the organ-donation system.

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get around. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the first track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot, as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.

Modern subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground. Today there are 94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world. The busiest of these subway systems is the Tokyo Metro which opened in 1927. This efficient subway has two billion riders per year, and “pushers” work on the platforms during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times, subway cars have been packed with up to 300 people! Stations like the famous Ginza Sugo Eki Ginza Consolidated Station include underground department store, supermarkets, restaurants, and specialty shops. Shoppers never have to go above ground!

M: Do not forget to attend Prof. Barn’s lecture on Thursday morning. We’ll meet you at the entrance at 8:30.

W: Thank you for telling me. I thought it was on Friday morning.

Text 2

W: I’ve just locked my keys in my room. Now what should I do?

M: I can’t believe it. You are always so careless. Anyhow let’s calm down and try to figure things out.

Text 3

M: How did you find your job? Was it advertised in the paper?

W: I looked and looked for months without finding anything. Then a friend told me about this job. So I applied and got it.

W: You are lucky.

Text 4

M: Do you need any help, Madam?

W: That’s right.

M: Well, we have a few upstairs.

Text 5

M: Tracy, you look happy. Did you win a prize?

Text 6

M: How often do you use the Internet?

W: I use it almost every day, but I usually only use it to check my e-mail. I don’t often surf the net. You use the Internet a lot, don’t you?

M: Yes. I use it to find products and components at the lowest prices for my company. It can be frustrating when the connection is poor.

W: So, you’re online eight hours a day.

M: Yes. I like the job, though. Sometimes, I help other people in the office if they’re having trouble online.

W: How useful do you think the Internet is as a source of information?

M: I think it’s fairly useful, but there are two big problems. First, a lot of the information you find online is false. Second, when you buy something online, you don’t see it until you actually get it.

W: How do you solve those problems when you’re buying something online?

M: What I do is find the website of shops. Then someone from our company visits the shop and buys when they’ve seen that the products are genuine and suitable.

M: You know the weather’s been awfully so far this summer.

W: I know. This is very unusual for Japan. Usually by now it’s really hot and humid. I’m not sure why, but this summer we’ve had very little rain and surprisingly cool temperatures.

M: Well, either way I love it. I remember last summer. Oh, it was terrible. I didn’t have an air-conditioner, and my apartment was on the fifth floor. Every night I slept on top of my bed with the windows wide-open and a fan six inches from my face.

W: That sounds pretty rough. I guess. I’ve gotten used to the heat, so I don’t notice it as much. However, last year was definitely a lot hotter than this year. And, to be honest, I am enjoying the break. What are summers like for you back home?

M: For one thing, there’s little humidity. Seattle is right on the ocean so we always have a nice offshore breeze blowing in, and it doesn’t really get hot until late July. That’s why I found it so terrible last year. Our summers are just so different.

W: Interesting. Seattle sounds like a great place to be during the summer.

Now it’s 9 o’clock, time for the evening news.

From farm to table, authorities in Beijing say they are able to track the progress of farm animals and crops aimed for human consumption.

The Beijing Olympic organizing committee Thursday showed reporters the Internet ? based supervision system that provides detailed information of food products at every step of production. Chinese authorities say they will also set up mobile response teams to react quickly if there are any problems.

One worry is the possibility of banned chemicals in the Chinese meat supply, and the chance that athletes consuming such meat could be accused of taking them deliberately. The New York Times report says the U.S. Olympic Committee is shipping 11,000 kilograms of beef, chicken and pork to China for the games. Most of that food being brought by the Americans will be served at the U.S. Olympic athlete training center at Beijing Normal University, which lies outside the Olympic village.

At Thursday’s news conference, one journalist asked about the report.

Tang Yunhua, an officer of Beijing’s Food Safety Office, said athletes will not be allowed to bring their own food into the Olympic Village. She says Chinese authorities cannot guarantee the safety of outside food, and will not know if it is up to the correct standards.

Kang Yi, food division chief for the Beijing Olympic organizing committee, called the U.S. team’s reported plans “regrettable.” She says the Chinese authorities have made a lot of preparations for the athletes of the world to get together. “It is a pity,” she said, “if the U.S. team is not taking part in these preparations.”

Therefore, time passes without us really ___34____ it, and seems to go quickly.

If the brain is not so active, it concentrates its full energies on monitoring the passing of time. ____35___, time seems to go slowly.

However, the researchers found ___36____ the more the volunteers concentrated on how long an image appeared for, the more accurate were their estimates(估計) of its duration.

Lead researcher Dr Jennifer Coull said many areas of the brain help estimate time. These areas also play a key ___37____ in controlling movement and ___38____ for action.

"This suggests that the brain may ___39____ sense of time as intervals(間隔) between movements," she explained. "For example, a musician marks time with his foot, while an athlete anticipates(可以預料) the sound of a starter's(賽跑的發令員) pistol. "

Microsoft founder Bill Gates said that he planned to give away almost all of his vast fortune, largely to the cause of global health, during the course of his lifetime. With an estimated worth of more than $ 40 billion, according to Forbes, the project will be no small feat for Gates. Having already provided the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with $ 24 billion to address global health issues, Gates said that eventually his entire fortune will be put towards the cause except “a few percent left for the kids.”

So what has made the richest man in the world to channel his resources so heavily into one interest? Gates believes that “the equality of opportunity” in which Americans take such pride needs to extend to other nations around the world. Improving the health of the populations, he says, has proven to be an essential method in helping poor countries to be financially successful. “National borders allow inequalities,” said Gates, “We all need to take a more global view, rather than just saying my country is doing well. We have to step up these health issues, knowing how few resources are going into them.”

Gates said that both his parents set good examples to him as a child. His father, William H. Gates, was the head of the local Planned Parenthood, and his mother, Mary, volunteered for the United Way. As he gathered his fortune, Gates knew he would eventually want to give back as well, but he didn’t expect to devote himself whole-heartedly to one project until he was about 60.

However, Gates, 47, began to question his ability to wait that long. “It seemed there was a real time urgency,” Gates said, “I started to think, how many lives could I save before then?”

41. Why will Bill Gates give away his vast fortune?

C. his great success in business                      D. his concerns for suffering people

44. According to the passage, which word can be used to describe Bill Gates?

A. brave               B. kind-hearted         C. strong-minded        D. confident

Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case.

The ridge structure on a person’s fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.

Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.

When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Special techniques are used to “develop” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.

45. Scientists and experts have proved that the pattern of a human being’s finger skin ________.

A. is similar to his mother’s                 B. is valuable to himself only

C. is like that of others with the same type of blood

D. is different from that of all others

46. If your fingers are wounded by knife, fire or other means, the structure of skin will ________.

A. be changed partly                     B. be replaced by a different one

C. be the same when the wound is recovered  D. become ugly

47. Some criminals remove their own finger-prints by ________.

A. using printer’s ink                     B. injuring the inner skin

C. damaging the outer skin                 D. damaging the color

48. Finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case because it ________.

A. is complicated but reliable               B. is simple and not expensive

C. is expensive but easy to do                 D. can bring a lot of money

C

There are good Santas and there are bad Santas. The good Santas all realize one thing: In the mind of a child, Santa Claus is perfect.

That’s difficult. And so they come from around the world to attend the Charles W. Howard School in Midland, Mich. The school offers a three-day, 40-hour course for Santas hoping to be excellent. There’s a real range to what Santas earn, from big bucks for large events to no pay for charities. One thing for them all is a pure love for children.

A former Macy’s Santa named Charles Howard founded the Michigan school in 1937. “Many people will think if you have a suit, you’re a Santa,” said Tom Valent, the school’s current dean. “It’s more than that.” Tom is Santa’s training director. “Santa Claus can be a religious(宗教的)figure,”Tom said. “He can also be a non-religious figure. He’s a man who stands for all good things.”

The school teaches everything from breathing techniques for carol singing to the beard maintenance. There are lessons in child psychology, sign language and even media training for talk-show appearances and call-in shows. Santas also need to make sure they know all the names of the reindeer. What’s harder to deal with, however, is children who ask for Christmas gifts like bringing daddy home or making mommy happy again.

After spending time in the classroom, Weir went to the mall to test his training. However, at one point, his hat fell off, and he was unsure how to react. “You’re the real Santa,” Valent said. “Pick that hat up, slip it back on, keep smiling and do your job. You’ve got to stay on top of your game. Even the last one at night, when you’re tired, you’ve got to remember: This one’s forever, so do a good job.”

49. According to the passage, good Santas should be the ones that ________.

A. can offer the children some gifts                B. help adults look after their children

C. have ability to make children happy      D. should be perfect in the mind of children

50. The underlined words “big bucks” should refer to ________.

A. lots of money          B. many gifts     C. loves for children     D. gifts from children

51. The Michigan school was founded by Charles Howard with the purpose to ________.

A. train the pet reindeer for the Santas       B. earned money from its students

C. train perfect Santas for the world        D. show the world’s concern to the poor

52. According to Weir’s performance, we can conclude that ________.

A. Weir was short of experience              B. Weir was not fit for the job as a Santa

C. Weir did very badly in the game            D. Weir was not a good student in school

Can you understand the beginning of this essay? "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & 3 kds FTF."

The Scottish teacher who received it in class had no idea what the girl who wrote it meant. The essay was written in a form of English used in cell phones text messages. Text messages (also called SMS) through cell phones became very popular in the late 1990s. At first, mobile phone companies thought that text messaging would be a good way to send messages to customers, but customers quickly began to use the text messaging service to send messages to each other. Teenagers in particular enjoyed using text messaging, and they began to create a new language for messages called "texting"

A text message is limited to 160 characters, including letters, spaces, and numbers, so messages must be kept short. In addition, typing on the small keypad of a cell phone is difficult, so it's common to make words shorter. In texting, a single letter or number can represent a word, like "r" for "are," "u" for "you," and "2"for "to." Several letters can also represent a phrase, like "lol" for "laughing out loud." Another characteristic of texting is the leaving out of letters in a word, like spelling "please" as "pls."

Some parents and teachers worry that texting will make children bad spellers and bad writers. The student who wrote the essay at the top of this page said writing that way was more comfortable for her. (The essay said, "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. "It takes an entire village to raise a child." That's an old proverb that is being quoted more and more often these days. And I'm pleased about that.

Nowadays, some of us students have formed some bad habits on campus. For example, some students leave the lights on in the daytime, or let water running after washing. Some leave over lunch food on the table after eating. Besides, waste paper can be seen everywhere. It is well known that these habits will have a bad influence on our character and behavior. What’s worse, they can not only increase our cost at school and add financial burden to our parents, but also waste the limited resource. So to build a resource-saving campus, it is high time that we had to deal with the problems. In my opinion, we should start with ourselves to save everything. I’d like to remind my classmates to take the lead in reducing the waste. We must form some good habits. For example, when we brush our teeth and wash hands, never leave water running unnecessarily and when we leave classrooms, we should make sure that the light have been turned off.

A new study found that inner-city kids living in neighborhoods with more green space gained about 13% less weight over a two-year period than kids living among more concrete and fewer trees. Such findings tell a powerful story. The obesity epidemic(肥胖癥的流行)began in the 1980s, and many people think it results from increased portion(食物) sizes and inactivity , but that can't be everything. Big Macs and TVs have been with us for a long time. "Most experts agree that the changes were related to something in the environment," says Thomas Glass of the Hopkins School of Public Health. That something could be a shrinking of the green.

The new research, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, isn't the first to associate greenery with better health, but it does get us closer to identifying what works and why. At its most straightforward, a green neighborhood simply means more places for kids to play ― which is important since time spent outdoors is one of the strongest links to children's activity levels.

Glass warns that most studies don't necessarily prove a link between greenness and health, but they're helping spur action. In September the U.S. government approved the No Child Left Inside Act to encourage public initiatives(積極性)aimed at exposing kids to the outdoors.

Finding green space is, of course, not always easy, and you may have to work a bit to get your family a little grass and trees. If you live in a suburb or a city with good parks, take advantage of what's there. Your children in particular will love it ― and their bodies will thank you.

Tight-lipped elders used to say, “It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get.”

Psychology teaches that you do get what you want if you know what you want and want the right things.

You can make a mental blueprint of a desire as you would make a blueprint of a house, and each of us is continually making these blueprints in the general routine of everyday living. If we intend to have friends to dinner, we plan the menu, make a shopping list, decide which food to cook first, and such planning is an essential for any type of meal to be served.

Similarly, if you want to find a job, take a sheet of paper, and write a brief account of yourself. In making a blueprint for a job, begin with yourself, for when you know exactly what you have to offer, you can intelligently plan where to sell your services.

This account of yourself is actually a sketch (概括)of your working life and should include education, experience and references.Such an account is valuable. It can be referred to in filling out standard application blanks and is extremely helpful in personal interviews. While talking to you, your could-be employer is deciding whether your education, your experience, and other qualifications, will pay him to employ you and your “wares” and abilities must be displayed in an orderly and reasonably connected manner.

When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities and desires, you have something tangible(實在的) to sell. Then you are ready to hunt for a job.Get all the possible information about your could-be job.Make inquiries as to the details regarding the job and the firm.Keep your eyes and ears open, and use your own judgment.Spend a certain amount of time each day seeking the employment you wish for, and keep in mind: Securing a job is your job now.

64.What do the elders mean when they say, “It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get”?

A.You’ll probably get what you want.               B.You are supposed to be practical.

C.You should be dissatisfied with what you have.  D.It’s essential to set a goal for yourself.

65.A blueprint made before inviting a friend to dinner is used in this passage as ________.

A.an example of how to write an application for a job

B.an indication of how to secure a good job

C.a guideline for job seekers to succeed

D.a principle for job evaluation and description

66.According to the passage, one must write an account of himself before starting to find a job because ______.

A.that is the first step to please the employer           B.that is the requirement of the employer

C.it enables him to know when to sell his services    D.it enables him to become clearly aware of himself

For many children the search for E.T. or life from another planet may seem to be already over. What is it about this big-eyed creature from outer space that has made America’s children and many adults so excited? Psychologists say that the film E.T., like ancient fairy tales, contains powerful stories that help children through the difficult process of growing up. The message that fairy tales bring to the child is that a struggle against severe difficulties in life cannot be avoided, but that if one does not run away but meets unexpected and often unjust hardships, one overcomes all obstacles(困難) and at the end comes out victorious.

Today’s children, growing up alone in homes separated from other children, need fairy tales even more than those did at the time when the tales were first told. In E.T. they find a fairy tale with a special interest because it is set in the space age, which is closer to their situation than a story set in an old castle. E.T. may not be good-looking physically, but he is totally harmless, kind and charming. No child need fear an outer space filled with creatures like E.T. Actually, children often have a strong need for imaginary playmates.

For all children, the film raises the question of the need to grow up and the desire to stay a child. Elliott decides not to go with E.T. aboard the spaceship, where he could continue living in an imaginary world. As one child said, “Elliott stayed on Earth because he has to grow up and you can’t grow up on the faraway planet of Jupiter. You stay small and a kid like E.T.”

The film offers many ideas from the traditional fairy tale. Firstly, good children get the better of bad adults. Secondly, the hero is put in a difficult position in the early stages of the story but there is a happy ending when he is finally rescued. Thirdly, the film offers the idea of rebirth, which is found in many fairy tales. Finally, the story also reminds one of “The Three Feathers” by the well-known writers of fairy tales―the Grimm brothers. In this story, the youngest son wins his father’s kingdom by defeating his brothers with the help of an ugly old toad(癩蛤蟆). But to a final test, to bring back the most beautiful woman, he wins again by choosing the toad who turns into a beauty. Thus, it is love which turns even ugly things into something beautiful. It’s easy to see how that is true of E.T.

67. The story of E.T. tells people______.

 A. how difficult the process of growing up can be

 B. How parents should take good care of their lonely children

 C. victory can be achieved if people face difficulties bravely

 D. that children need playmates and fairy tales badly

68. One of the reasons children like E.T. is that______.

 A. E.T. is a big-eyed good-looking creature      B. the story is set in an old castle

 C. it is an exciting, ancient fairy tale            D. E.T. is likable, harmless and kind-hearted

69. Elliott did not go with E.T. on board the spaceship because_______.

 A. he did not belong there                  B. he would look like E.T. there

 C. he had to stay on earth and “grow up”      D. E.T.’s home was an imaginary place that did not exist

70. The theme of “The Three Feathers” is _______.

 A. love can turn ugly things into something beautiful     B. good children get the better of bad adults

 C. brave people can overcome all difficulties            D. good people will finally enjoy a rebirth

The introduction of computerized information systems has greatly affected management control in many companies. Even a neighborhood shopkeeper may now use computers to control sales, billing, and other activities. In large companies, electronic data processing systems monitor entire projects and sets of operations.

Before the widespread use of computers, managers could not make full use of a large amount of valuable information about a company's activities. The information either reached managers too late or was too late to be used. Today, managers are facing plenty of data processing and information instruments. In place of a few financial controls, managers can depend on computer-based information systems to control activities in every area of their company. On any kinds of performance measures, the information provided by these systems helps managers compare standards with actual results, find out problems, and take corrective action before it is too late to make changes.
Now, there are about 220 million microcomputers in use in the United States---9 for every 10 citizens. It is estimated that by 2016, 90 percent of American managers will be using some sort of electronic work station. In order for managers to be sure that the computer-based information they are receiving is accurate, they need to understand how computers work. Although in most cases they do not need to learn how to program computers, managers should understand clearly how computerized information systems work; how they are developed; their limitations and costs; and the manner in which information systems may be used. Such an understanding is not difficult to achieve.
One research has found that business firms are more successful in teaching basic information about computers to business graduates than they are in teaching business subjects to computer science graduates.

In modern society, drugs are becoming a more and more serious problem in the world. The trade of drugs is widespread, which costs up to $800 billion every year.

As we all know, drugs do great harm to our health, even causing people to die at an early age. Meanwhile, it directly contributes to the happening of crimes. But to our sadness, more and more young people begin taking drugs.

As is shown on the chart above, 30% of the teenagers taking drugs are cheated into doing it, and 50% are driven by curiosity. Another 15% just seek excitements or try to get rid of their anxieties. The rest try it for some other reasons.

In order to protect us students from drugs, what should we do? I think, we should be careful to make friends and stay away from those who always behave badly. Also, it’s very important for us to lead a healthy lifestyle and hold positive attitudes towards life. Do remember that trying drugs out of curiosity is very dangerous.

Text 10

What happened to me that day is just unbelievable. The first thing to go wrong is that all the parking spaces were taken. We had to park on the grass and hoped that we would not get a parking ticket. When I got to the admissions office, there was already a long line of students waiting. By the time it was my turn, two of the courses I needed were filled and I had to go back to my adviser and make out a whole new timetable. Although I did sign up for all my courses, I missed lunch. The next thing to go wrong is that the bookstore has sold out one of the required textbooks. As I was leaving, I wondered what else could possibly happen, then I saw a policeman standing beside my car and writing out a ticket.

Gates, however, saw a(n)   48   and jumped on it. He told the executive that   49   he was working on his own operating system (he wasn't) and he would be   50   to discuss it with the executive in a few weeks.

As an engineer he had a better idea than the executive about what he needed, and when he found someone with an operating system that he liked, he made modifications(修改)  53  on what the executive told him. His meeting a few weeks later was a great   54  , and Gates' new operating system was sold to the large company and the sale became the foundation of Microsoft. Within two decades Gates was the richest man in the world. He   55   his own luck by seizing an unexpected opportunity.

John had been on the road visiting clients for more than three weeks. He couldn't wait to get back to Ohio to see his wife and children. It was coming on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too tired. He was in a small town just outside of Little Rock when he drove by a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send Mom some roses."

He went into the small shop and saw a young man talking to the clerk. "How many roses can I get for six dollars, madam?" the boy asked. The clerk was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with carnations.

"No. I have to have roses." He said, "My mom was sick so much last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that's her favorite." He was firm.

The clerk looked up at John and was just shaking her head. Something inside of John was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. John had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the clerk and silently mouthed he would pay for the boy's roses.

The clerk looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for six dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran from the store. It was worth the extra thirty-five dollars just to see that kind of excitement.

John ordered his own flowers and had the clerk be sure that delivery would include a note telling his mother how much he loved her. As he drove away from the shop, he was feeling very good. He caught a light about two blocks from the shop. As he waited at the light, he saw the young boy walking down the sidewalk. He watched him cross the street and enter a park through two huge gates. Suddenly he realized it wasn't a park. It was a cemetery(公墓. He could see the young man turn there by gate and walk along the fence.

The light changed, and John slowly crossed the crossing. He pulled over and on an impulse(沖動之下) got out and began to follow the boy down the fence line. John was on the sidewalk, thirty or forty steps behind the boy, who walked inside the cemetery fence. The young man stopped by a small monument and went on his knees. He carefully laid the roses on the tomb and began to sob. John felt like an intruder but he couldn't leave. He stared at the little boy's trembling body and listened to his silent crying.

As he cried, he heard the young man speak, "Mommy, oh Mommy, why didn't I tell you how much I love you? Why didn't I tell you one more time? Jesus, please, find my mommy. Tell my Mommy I love her."

John turned, tears in his eyes, and walked back to his car. He drove quickly to the flower shop and told her he would take the flowers personally. He wanted to be sure and tell his mother one more time just how much he loved her.

An Iraqi reporter called President George W. Bush a "dog" and threw his shoes at him on Sunday, staining a farewell visit to Baghdad which was meant to mark greater security in Iraq after years of bloody conflict, Reuters reported. "It's like going to a political assembly and have people yell at you. It's a way for people to draw attention," Bush said. Bush joked, saying that all he can report was that it was a size 10 shoe, then calmly took questions.

A new United Nations report says nearly two million children die each year because they have no access to clean water. The 2006 Human Development Report, released Thursday in South Africa, says most of the deaths are caused by diarrhea and dysentery brought on by dirty water.

The report's leading author, Kevin Watkins, said that the reason behind the water crisis is not a shortage of water, but a lack of will On the part of governments to provide water to people: The report calls on the international community to do more to help solve the problem by doubling annual contributions for water and cleanness.

Indian police say they have found four bombs on a train in the eastern city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). Authorities described the bombs as crude(土制的). They were discovered during a security check before the train was scheduled to leave for the holy Hindu town of Tarakeswar. There has been no claim of responsibility for the explosive devices.

Clearly if we are to participate in the society in which we live, we must communicate with other people. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.

Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication, and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become one of the main factors of current society. Two things, above others, have caused the extreme growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission(傳輸) and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed(失去優勢) by international news.

No longer is the possession of information confined(局限于) to a privileged minority. In the last century, the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago, people used to go to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a program that is being channeled into millions of homes.

Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.

Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communication is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.

64. In the first paragraph the writer stresses the ________ of face-to-face contact in social setting.

    A. performance        B. usefulness         C. limitation         D. means

65. It is implied in the passage that ____________.

    A. local news used to be the only source of information

    B. local news still takes a significant place

    C. national news is becoming more popular

    D. international news is the fastest transmitted news

66. Which of the following statements is NOT correct?

    A. To possess information used to be privileged.

    B. Public libraries have replaced private libraries.

    C. Communication means more than transmission.

    D. Information influences ways of life and thinking.

A moment later I heard my uncle calling me, and found the two men on the road together. The captain then addressed me as if I was his equal, which was very pleasing to a young fellow like me.

"Sir," said he, "Mr. Balfour tells me great things of you, and I like your looks. I wish I was staying here longer so that we might become friends. But we'll make the most of the short time that we have. You must come on board my brig(雙桅船) for half an hour and have a drink with me."

Now, I cannot describe how eager 1 was to see the inside of a ship. But I was not going to put myself in danger, and I told him my uncle and I had an appointment with a lawyer.

"Yes," said he, "he told me of that. But, you see, the boat will set you on shore farther along, near Rankeillor's house." And here he suddenly leaned down and whispered in my ear: "Take care; the old devil(惡魔) has evil plans. Come on board till I can have a Word with you."

Then, passing his arm through mine, he continued aloud, as he set off towards his boat: "Now what can I bring you from Carolina? Any friend of Mr. Balfour can ask for what he likes. A roll of tobacco? Indian feather work? A wild beast's skin? A stone pipe? A mocking-bird that cries just like a cat? Make your choice and give your order."

By this time we were beside his boat and he was helping me in. I did not dream of refusing. I thought (like a fool) that 1 had found a friend and helper, and I was looking forward to seeing the ship. As soon as we were all in our places the boat was pushed off and began to move over the water. I was so delighted with this new experience that I hardly understood what the captain said, and must have answered him without thinking.

As soon as we were alongside, Hoseason ordered a rope and chair to be sent down, declaring that he and I must be the first to go on board. I was lifted into the air and set down again on the deck(甲板), where the captain stood waiting for me and immediately slipped his arm under mine. I stood there, rather confused and perhaps a little afraid, but delighted with the strange things all around me, while the captain pointed out some of the strangest and told me their names and uses.

And then I saw that my uncle was not with us.

I felt I was lost. With all my strength, I tore myself out of the captain's grasp and ran to the side of the ship. Yes, there was the ship being rowed back to the shore, with my uncle sitting in it. I gave a wild cry-so loud that it rang out over the harbor, and my uncle turned around and showed me a face full of cruelty and terror.

That was the last thing I saw. Already strong hands had been pulling me back fromthe ship's side, and now lightning seemed to strike me. I saw a great flash of fire, and fell unconscious.

第一節  任務型閱讀(共10小題,每小題1分,滿分10分)

    請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入恰當的單詞。

注意:每個空格只填一個單詞。

A record 2.3 billion passenger trips will be taken in China during the upcoming Lunar New Year period, the country% most important holiday, Chinese media said on Thursday.

A record 188 million people will take to the nation's railway system, 2 billion road trips will be taken and 24 million will take holiday-related flights in January and February, the China Daily said, in what is the world's biggest annual migration.

The yearly migration is marked by chaotic scenes as masses of Chinese desperate to return home overcrowded the nation's transport system, AFP said.

The official Chinese New Year holiday for 2009 falls on January 26, earlier than most years .

However, the travel rush usually begins up to two weeks before that, and will last 40 days beginning from Jan 11 to Feb 19.

Earlier this year, the chaos was dramatically mixed with unusually serious winter ice storms that spread suffering across a huge land of the country just as the migration was getting under way.

Citing(引述) the government's main economic planning agency, the China Daily said 2009 could see more chaos as this Chinese New Year follows closely after the Western New Year on January 1. Many college students and other people typically travel just before or after the Western New Year and the upcoming holidays could see both migrations overcrowding the transport system at the same time, it said.

People's Daily Online launched an online survey titled "What problem are you most concerned about for the upcoming 2009 Spring Festival railway transport peak season?" on December 9. By 8:00 pm that day, a total of 17,496 netizens had participated in the survey, and. 14,403 of them chose "buying train tickets is difficult, it is almost impossible to get one," accounting for 82.3% of the total number of participants.

The National Development and Reform Commission also warned local governments to take steps to cope with the expected crush, particularly in coastal manufacturing regions.

According to the China Daily, the weather forecast during the Spring Festival is that most of the country will experience normal temperatures for that time of year, but heavy snows were expected in some regions.

Extension of the season

It begins from Jan. 11 and ends on Feb. 19, (71)   ▲   40 days.

Reasons for the peak season

The upcoming 2009 Spring Festival transportation peak season of China is also regarded as the world's biggest (72)   ▲   migration, because this Chinese traditional New Year comes soon after the (73)   ▲   New Year, and migrations of many college students and other people will swamp the transport system at the same time.
