Aidan has autism and so does his brother, Josiah. Aidan does not speak while Josiah, in some situations. "After people learn that Aidan doesn't speak, one response they will have is to ask: 'So he doesn't know words?' or 'Does he not understand anything that we're saying?'" said Hammond. Those questions pressed Hammond to find a way to show the life of people with autism.
Hammond said Aidan understood words. He communicated by using a tablet that let him express himself through pictures and words. "When my son was younger, some experts would say, 'Oh, he is unlikely to speak.' But he's kind of communicating with me, just in a unique way," Hammond said. "And I love that. I love that for him."
Aidan's communication method is shown in A Day With No Words. "I wanted to support my son in every possible way that I could," Hammond said.
Hammond surely hopes to make readers think more deeply about communication and learn more about autism. Besides, she also wants to show close ties she has with her son, Aidan.
