Every day at Misselthwaite Manor was exactly the same as the day before. Mary woke up in her room and Martha was making a fire. Then she ate her breakfast and after that she went out and ran around the garden. She hated (討厭) the strong wind. But the fresh air put colour onto her face and soon she started eating more.
There were no toys in her room or in the garden. Because she had nothing to play with, she walked a lot and tried to find things. Sometimes she saw Ben Weatherstaff, but he was always busy and usually looked angry.

He flew to the top of a tree and started singing loudly. "He's in the secret garden," Mary thought. She walked around the garden and looked very carefully, but she couldn't see a door.
That night after supper, she decided to ask Martha about the locked garden.
"Why does Mr Craven hate the garden, Martha?"
"It was Mrs Craven's garden. She made it after they got married (結婚)."
"But how did Mrs Craven die?" asked Mary.
"There was an old tree with a branch (樹枝) like a seat in the garden. One day, she was sitting there and the branch broke. The branch hit her and the next day she died. Now Mr Craven hates the garden."
