Our volunteer team arrived at a school in the mountains of Guizhou in July. The school provided simple lessons for children from nearby villages.
Everything went well in the first week. However, our life changed when the rainy season came. One day, water seeped (滲透) into the classrooms. This made us scared (scare). Some of us planned to send the children home, but others disagreed. We sat in silence (沉默) and couldn't decide what to do.
Right then, a 12-year-old girl said, "Don't worry, teachers! We face (face) this every year. We know how to deal with the problem." Then the children organized the task by themselves (they). Some swept the water away, others quickly (quick) moved the textbooks to higher places. Then they taught us local songs. Their clear voices rose (rise) above the sound of raindrops. It seemed that the worse (bad) the environment was, the stronger these children were.
What the children did really touched (感動) us and we finished cleaning (clean) up the mess happily. One of my teammates Li Wei even turned the situation into a science lesson about weather, while I taught English words like "rain" and "help".
When the rain stopped, the sun began to shine in the sky. We were very thankful for the lessons the children taught us.
